Vacancy – StMM Caretaker

Hours: 9.00 am – 1.30 pm 

Days: Monday to Saturday 

9.00am Open Church 


1. Inside cleaning

Church entrance, body of the Church, Vestry, Magdalene Centre (including stairs), Utility Room, Toilets (every day), Servery, hall to Parish Office and Parish Office

2. Outside cleaning

Churchyard, drains, steps to Parish Office

3. Roof level

Check gutters, downpipes, gullies and roofs, rodding out drain runs to ensure water clears easily. Clear leaves and bird remains

Clear concealed valley gutters

4. Check bird-proofing in Tower

5. Sweep out Tower


• Put out boards to advertise Services, the Book Shop and the Coffee Shop

• Support staff in the Book Shop and Coffee Shop as needed

• Check regularly stocks of Church, Vestry, Coffee Shop etc (batteries, bulbs, matches, cleaning supplies)

• Purchase bulbs and others supplies as required

• Change low level light bulbs (higher level light bulbs are replaced by a contractor)

• Liaise with Parish Administrator regarding other general supplies

• Welcome and assist visitors as needed

• Read Gas and Electricity Meters on a monthly basis – report readings to the Parish Administrator

• Boiler – check Boiler Room on a regular basis to ensure no leaks etc. Check settings for Upper Room heating and adjust if necessary

• Rubbish removal – collection day is early Monday. The collection point is outside the Vicarage

• General maintenance in and around Church buildings

• Open Magdalene Centre for groups using the Upper Room during the week

• Prepare Church for events including concerts, evening meetings etc

• Assist Vicar with special services during the week, eg Funerals, as directed

• Assist Vicar with other weekday services as directed

• Check the tidiness of the notice boards in the Church

• Votive Stand – refill candles and keep stand clean. Check Nave Altar candles. Empty donations receptacle as necessary (money goes into Vestry)

• Ensure there are always spare Aumbry lights in the St Andrew Chapel

• Check the air compressor in the Tower once a week

• Supervise volunteer assistant cleaners in pastorally sensitive manner

• Keep Caretaker’s cupboard tidy so others can find supplies of necessaries in Caretaker’s absence

• Other duties as directed by the Vicar or Line Manager
