CANDLELIGHT TOURS – Tuesday 5th (5pm) and Thursday 7th (7.30pm)
“Have you ever wondered what a candlelight tour of St Mary’s would be like? Following the success of last year’s tour we shall again lead a party around the church, bringing its history to life. We will finish with mince pies in the coffee shop. Why not come along to learn more about our beautiful building and bring a friend too.
We have thought for many years that the season of Advent was being lost among the commercialism of Christmas. To counter this, we moved the Christingle Service to the Church Family Service at the beginning of December and introduced “From Darkness to Light”. Both services, in very different ways, point to the great Advent cry of hope from the prophet, Isaiah:
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
and fulfilled in John’s Gospel:
This is the verdict: Light has come into the world.
Advent is a season of expectation – we eagerly anticipate and prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, our new born King and hope that He will soon return in Glory. It is a penitential season too, where we consider also our sinful nature and how this separates us from a close relationship with God. So, we journey throughout the weeks of Advent from our own darkness into His glorious light.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the choir, choristers, organists, musicians and Miles Quick, our Musical Director, for all the hard work they have put into preparing for From Darkness to Light. If you have never been to this service, why not come tomorrow evening at 7.00pm? Don’t forget, too, that the very special Service of Lessons and Carols will happen on 17th December at 6.30pm.
What a celebration we had at our last Worship@5 service . Marcus Paul came to talk about “Can I Change?” focusing on the conversion of St Paul. Our young people sang and played instruments and we worshipped God together. Over 90 people came. There will not be a Worship@5 (nor our 5.00pm Healing Service) in December but we look forward to welcoming everyone back again on the third Sunday of January when Rod will be tackling the difficult issue – ”Why does God Allow Suffering?” Why not invite a friend along.
Don’t forget that we have two big services for Advent Sunday on 3rd December. In the morning, at 10.00am, we have our annual Christingle Service. We hope many of you will come to see the orange Christingles being made and lit by our children.
The Baptism families have been invited especially so we’re am sure it will be a very happy and worshipful occasion.
In the evening, we have the spectacular “From Darkness to Light” service. At 7pm candles will fill our beautiful church with light again as we welcome in the Advent season with Advent carols and special musical items. The Ven. Simon Hill will preach. This gets more and more popular each year as we witness God’s light filling the church. Do come.
“WANTED – for the CHRISTINGLE SERVICE on 3rd December – Table candelabra, cupcake holders suitable for candles (the stubby/tall fatter sort) and branched candle holders . If you can lend them, please let Rod or myself know.
We are working on producing a new version of the Today Sheet, so look out for some different looking ones over the next few weeks!
If you are able to supply any of these we would be so grateful.
Diane & Derek
