Happy Easter!

A happy Easter to you all this morning and a special welcome to our visitors. We greet everyone who comes to St Mary Magdalene’s as fellow pilgrims on a journey of faith.  Today, we have left the sparseness of the penitential season of Lent behind and we cry out the Easter response:“He’s not dead, for He has risen!”

The church looks resplendent today, filled with glorious Easter lilies. Each lily is given in memory of a loved one which reminds us that on the cross Jesus broke the power of sin and death and gave us the gift of eternal life. We thank our dedicated flower team for all the work they have put in to arrange the flowers in such a beautiful way. (more…)

Good Friday Unity Service and ‘Shout Out’

The ‘Unity Service for Good Friday’ was an ecumenical service of devotion at the foot of the cross of Jesus. It was well attended by people from any churches in Taunton.  The congregation then walked down Whirligig Lane to join with the congregation of St James for a silent ‘Walk of Witness’ up to the Market House where hundreds of Christians joined in a ‘Good Friday Shout Out’.

A bag of coins – the price of Jesus’ betrayal
A crown of thorns – the cruel distortion of Christ’s kingship
A crimson robe – the mockery of Christ’s authority and power
Some dice – the soldiers play games for Jesus’ worldly possessions
Three nails – the extreme suffering endured through crucifixion
A spear – the death of Jesus confirmed by the outflowing of blood and water (more…)

Easter Dawn Service – Bacon Butties!

If you are coming to our 6am Service on Easter Day at Kings Hall School and would like a bacon buttie, please sign the sheet at the back of church, as we need to know how many to cater for.

“On Sunday 30th April  we will hold the Annual Parish Church Meeting at 11.45am following coffee after  the 10.00am service .We will elect Churchwardens, PCC and Deanery Synod members.  Last year the PCC worked very hard to move us forward with our Mission Action Plan and if you would like to be part of the team, do consider standing. There are nomination forms at the back of church. We debate the proposal as to whether we should approach the Bishop to ask whether he would consider making St Mary Magdalene’s an Urban Minister. Do come and listen to the arguments for and against. The new PCC will take the feeling of the meeting on board when it makes the final decision.”

Rod Corke, Vicar

Holy Week Talks

We are very pleased that our new Archdeacon, Simon Hill will be leading our Holy Week talks at 7pm Mon-Weds 10th-13th April and he will also be preaching at our Maundy Thursday evening service, also starting at 7pm.   This service will be followed by a vigil in the church.   This vigil is a time when we remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he asks his disciples to wait for him while he agonizes over his future and prays.  Like Jesus, it is a time for us to wait, to be still, and to hopefully draw comfort from our Loving God.  Do come and join us for all or part of the vigil.
