Confirmation and Communion

We were delighted that Ruth, Morwenna, Ashton, Elle, Ginny and Basil were confirmed on Thursday night by Bishop Ruth. It was a special occasion with a full church and a sense of God’s Holy Spirit truly blessing us. Today will be the first communion for those confirmed – another special, spiritual moment to savour. Please continue to pray for them.

Recently, Jane Tibbs from the Diocese came to talk about children taking communion before confirmation. This is now common practice in the Diocese and encouraged by the Bishops. It brings back the real meaning of confirmation which is making a public commitment to Christ and confirming the Baptism promises made on your behalf by parents and Godparents. However, if you disagree with this practice, please tell me or any other member of the PCC so we can make sure your objections are heard at the meeting.

A Celebration & Farewell Service for Shirley

A Celebration & Farewell Service will be held here in church for Shirley Mason on November 7th at 12.00, followed by a Remembrance Party at Queens College. Dress code – colourful.

All welcome, but an idea of numbers would be appreciated. (Please let Kate know via the office).

Any donations may be made in Shirley’s name to your own charity. If you would like, bring a photo to the Remembrance Party to add to the photo board.

Wednesday Break Away

“Fancy a breather? A new social group has started at St Mary’s. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 9.30am in the children’s corner to take part in a variety of activities over tea and cake.

Here is what we have to look forward to over the next couple of months:

  • Wed November 4th – Card Making
  • Wed December 2nd – Joint Advent Service with Mothers Union Group at 10am

So, if you have done the school run, have some spare time in the working week or just like chatting over cake, come and join us. You will be very welcome!”

2016 Calendars

The bell ringers have published a very attractive calendar to raise money for the Bell Fund. It has room to make notes and is made up of photographs taken by ringers and members of the congregation. There are only a few left. They are £5 each and are available in the bookshop.

Initiatives at St John’s

There are two new initiatives happening at St John’s.

Night Light

Between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on the third Friday of the month St John’s will be open, candles will be lit and Gregorian chants placed and a quiet atmosphere created to be still and sense God’s Holy Spirit. Folk can pop in and out of this pool of spiritual refreshment and all are welcome.

On 1st November and continuing monthly on the first Sunday, St. John’s is offering evensong at 4.00pm. As this is our Communion Sunday, it will give folk a choice in the Benefice. Again, all who come along will be welcomed.

Please pray for these new ventures.

Somerset Sight Volunteers

Somerset Sight is urgently seeking volunteers for their visiting service in Taunton.

There are further details at the back of church.

Confirmation Prayer

We pray for our confirmation candidates, Ashton Pope, Ruth Hancock, Morwenna Crook, Elle Virgin, Virginia Spencer and Basil Kingscott as they take this important step in their faith journeys this week.

New Town Chaplain

On 1st November our Town Chaplain, Steven Reed will step down from his post. We are really grateful to him for developing this project and making chaplaincy to the shops and businesses in our town so central. Today we can announce that Adrian Prior-Sankey will take over from Steve and be officially commissioned by Ven John Reed at the Business Carol Service in December at St James’ Church.
