There is just time for a final blow-out before tightening the belt. Shrove Tuesday is the day for pancakes and quiz in the church – come to feast and laugh. Lent begins the next day! It is traditionally a time for fasting and penitence. Our church vestments will change to purple and flowers will be noticeable for their absence. Even the Gloria will not be said or sung at any Communion service. Bleak indeed!
However, variety is the spice of life. Doing without is good for self discipline, for our health, for our pocket and (if we are generous) for other people. Let’s welcome Lent on Ash Wednesday (5th March) in a positive way. In the evening at 7.30pm there will be a Service of Communion together with the opportunity to receive the ash of burnt Palm Crosses on our foreheads. This solemn service sets the tone for the rest of Lent.
This week (and next) our newly formed social group have compiled a form which we invite you to return to us asap. The form lists various social activities the group have thought about arranging and we need to find out which ones are most popular so we can prioritise.
Also, the group is aware that the list is not exhaustive and that you may have some thoughts. Please put them down and we will add them to the list. If you tick a box, this does not commit you to going on that particular event. It will just help us in our planning.
We would like to thank Valerie for her work on producing the form.
This coming Saturday (8th March) there is an important meeting in church at 10am. The Magdalene Fayre needs ideas and helpers. If you can offer either or both you are warmly invited to join this planning meeting. Just turn up and you will find other willing souls all wanting to work together. Our previous Caretaker, Nik Hirst, is not longer in Taunton and so cannot head up the Team.
The Archdeacon of Taunton, the Ven. John Reed, re-licences the Revds (from left to right) Sheila Murray, Dennis Cavaghan and Jane Eastell to the newly formed joint benefice of St Mary Magdalene and St John the Evangelist Taunton.
The short ceremony took place in St Andrew’s Chapel in St Mary’s on 18th February 2014.
The Archbishop of Wales, the Most Revd Barry Morgan, will be preaching and conducting the Parish Communion at 10am on Sunday 9th March. This is a great privilege for us and we hope as many as possible will attend that service. We are not aware that an Archbishop has ever graced our Altar and Pulpit before.
We aim to serve Welsh cakes after the service, and then to have a bring and share lunch. Do sign up on the list at the back of church.
