News & Updates

Here’s what we get up to at St Mary’s. Activities, news, notices – lots to interest and inform. You can also take a look at the Today sheet (pdf) and selected articles from our Together magazine.

Thank You from Open Door

We have had a lovely letter of appreciation from Tim Hather of the Open Door. He tells us that they are currently seeing between 15 and 25 people a day, all of whom are sleeping rough.  They provide hot drinks, meals, warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags to help make life a little easier for them.  A new venture for them involves weekly early morning outreach to identify new rough sleepers, and new volunteer key workers to work more closely with their service-users.  So, many thanks to all who donated.  Your generosity has helped make a real difference to the lives of those on the edge of our society.

Copper Mountain Scaled

We are delighted to report that £738.36 has been raised by the Copper Mountain. This will go towards our church mission projects. We will have a another “mountain to climb” in the New Year.
The breakdown was 1p—£119.40, 2p—£239.26, 5p—£85.30, 10p—£55, 20p—£155.40,  50p—£39, £1—£33, £2—£2, £10—£10.
Many thanks to all who contributed, had a guess, and not least to Morton and Joan Dunn for counting it all and Lloyds Bank for their help.

A Look at Chainda by Richard Austin

While on a visit to Zambia with a group from St Mary’s, Richard (retired TV reporter) created a video which shows the struggle faced by the people of Chainda, a settlement of at least 25,000, on the outskirts of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.

Harvest Supper 2012

Last week we enjoyed our Harvest Festival including the Harvest Supper. The evening began with David Nacey enthralling us with his magic show. A supper followed prepared by Margaret and her hard working team. A music quiz kept brains
ticking and then the evening finished with a short harp recital by Susan Sherratt and her daughter Katie. Thank you to everyone who made this evening a most enjoyable occasion.

Our Trip to Zambia

Here are some photos from our recent church trip to Zambia.  You will see that Zambia is a beautiful land of great contrasts. We are so  pleased we are linked with the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

Season of Remembrance

We will be shortly be moving into the season of remembrance. The All Soul’s service is at 6.30 pm on Sunday 28th October.  If you would like a loved one prayed for by name please write it clearly on the form at the back of church.

Rota for Flowers

The ROTA FOR FLOWERS in the St Andrew Chapel needs to be updated. The task involves preparing 2 simple arrangements or placing flowers in the vases that are provided. If you previously did a month and would like to continue, or you are a new volunteer, please contact Anne Chidgey on Taunton 276532.

Volunteers for Coffee Shop

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A WEEKLY COMMITMENT – We urgently need volunteers for the Coffee Shop, especially cashiers.  If you are able to cover a session just once or twice a month it would help enormously, in fact, if everyone did just one session a month we would have more than enough help.  On Thursday this week we were nearly forced to close through lack of support. Please speak to Paul or one of the wardens for more information.
