Here’s what we get up to at St Mary’s. Activities, news, notices – lots to interest and inform. You can also take a look at the Today sheet (pdf) and selected articles from our Together magazine.

Town Centre Chaplaincy

“Part of the money raised from our successful Magdalene Fayre will go to our continued support of the Town Centre Chaplaincy. I was with the chaplain, Adrian Prior Sankey last week. We were walking towards Vivary  Park when we were beckoned into G G the latest Indian restaurant that has just opened. It specialises in curries from North India.  We chatted to the new owners and they asked us to pray for them and their business. It was a a very special moment! A couple of new placements are in the pipeline including an invitation from Tesco to explore chaplaincy in their Wellington Road store. We have a new Parks chaplain, The Revd Tony Cox, who is a retired Methodist superintendent minister. At a recent Trust meeting we had the first results of a survey of substantial conversations our chaplains have had in their placements. A quarter of the conversations were about faith or were invitations to prayer. This is a very high figure and is really encouraging. The chaplains are being “salt and light” in our Town.”

Magdalene Fayre Success!

“Last week’s Today Sheet was written before the Magdalene Fayre took place so I was unable to give a full report. Today I can say the weather kept fine, we all worked as a team and realised a magnificent £2100 for the mission of the church. Well done everyone! It was a fun and enjoyable day. Lots of folk worked very hard, but a particular thanks to the small planning team that began work in January. All the hard work paid off.”

The Magdalene Fayre

“Yesterday, we enjoyed the Magdalene Fayre. As I am writing this on Friday I cannot give a detailed report except to say the forecast looks good and lots of items for sale have come in. I would like to thank the team who have helped arrange the Magdalene Fayre. I will give a full report next week and include the amount raised. Meanwhile, here are some photos from the day.”

2016-07-23-BellCasting from John Taylor site-tton7

The casting of the new tenor, sharp 9th and flat 6th took place on 23rd June in front of a coach load of folk from Taunton.

BELL FOUNDRY – the photograph shows molten metal being poured into our new tenor bell – The Somerset Bell – with the first coach party looking on.  The party that went yesterday saw this newly cast bell and also watched four other bells being cast.  There are two more trips arranged to the Foundry, 4th and 25th August when there is the opportunity to see the bells already cast and even more bells being cast.  A few places have become available.  If you feel you would like to go please contact Margaret Laver.  There is a coach available and the cost is £25 per person.

Organ Appeal

“Today I can give some news on our organ appeal. We have received the final amount from the generous  legacy of Pat Broach who loved the musical tradition at St Mary’s and was keen for Father Willis to be repaired. The legacy and the monies raised so far now total an encouraging £137,000. Miles is working hard to get estimates and we still have a way to go. Please consider sponsoring a pipe. Miles has arranged a visit to Michael Farley’s organ workshop in Colaton Raleigh (near Sidmouth) on August 24th. We would be delighted if you would like to come along.”
