Welcome The Revd Sue Rose

“On Sunday 19th June, we welcome The Revd Sue Rose, who has been recently appointed Diocesan Director of Ordinands.  Sue was formally incumbent of the Benefice of Cheddar, Draycott and Rodney Stoke and Sue and I have known each other for several years.  Sue will be preaching and presiding this morning and we look forward to her ministry.  So what does a Diocesan Director of Ordinands (DDO) do?  The DDO looks to encourage calling to ministry and helps to prepare candidates for national selection (a three day intensive interview called a BAP—Bishop’s Advisory Panel).  Once selected, the DDO supports the ordinands through training at theological college.  Please give Sue a warm welcome today.”

Last Saturday the PCC spent an enjoyable and productive day at The Mill House Retreat Centre, Tiverton.  We looked at and updated our Mission Action Plan and discussed the recently received plans our architect has drawn for the final stage of development in the Coffee Shop area.

Friday Morning Communion Service

“Last Thursday was Corpus Christi when we give God thanks for the celebration of Holy Communion.  Have you ever thought about starting your Friday morning with a short communion service?  After the service, a group of us go to County Stores for tea/coffee/teacakes/or a cooked breakfast.  No one has to come and the folk who go are not an exclusive group in any way.  We would love your company.”

Trinity Sunday

Today is Trinity Sunday, when we consider especially God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The classic definition of the Trinity is: “One God in three divine persons. The three persons are distinct, yet are one in “substance, essence and nature”. Today also marks the beginning of what the church calls Ordinary Time as distinct from Festival Time which includes the feasts of Christmas and Easter. The liturgical colour changes to white today and then to green. Green continues until Advent Sunday when the penitential purple colour is used. This seems an appropriate time to give thanks to our Sacristan, Sandra, and her serving team, who do such splendid work coping with the seasonal changes in our worship.

Charis Update

“I am delighted that progress is being made by Charis, the Trust set up by St Mary’s, Vineyard Fellowship and Creech Baptist Church to respond to the Syrian refugee crisis. The government pledged that 20,000 vulnerable Syrian refugees would be found new homes in the UK and we hope that the churches in Taunton, working together, will bring a family over to resettle later on this year. The refugees that will come over are not economic migrants. They will have arrived at a refugee camp traumatised from war-torn Syria and will have come with problems that the refugee camp is not equipped to cope with; e.g. kidney dialysis. Many of the refugees will resettle here for a short while but their heart is in their homeland and they will want to return. Our aim is to show Christian compassion and love to these unfortunate, displaced, people. Charis is holding a public meeting at St Mary Magdalene on Wednesday 22nd June at 7.30pm. Please come along if you can.”

MAGDALENE FAYRE 23rd July 2016

This is an early request for you to begin looking out any items that you could donate for the following stalls!

  • BOOKS, PUZZLES, BRIC A BRAC, WHITE ELEPHANT, BOTTLES & CANS TOMBOLA, HANDBAGS & JEWELLERY, TOYS & GAMES, BATHROOM/TOILETRIES (We need a volunteer to run this stall!)
  • CAKE & PRESERVES Stall, for which homemade cakes etc will be needed.
  • COFFEES, TEAS & LUNCHES produced by our wonderful catering team led by Sandra and Margaret.
  • RAFFLE – We would like to have a really good raffle, so prizes for this would be extremely welcome, and can be handed in to Tim (caretaker), Caroline Lee, Sandra Daw or Debbie Whittaker any time from now.
  • BOOKS – Usborne Books will be having a stall and will donate 20% of their takings to us.  They sell very good educational children’s books, and others, eg cookery, craft books, and it will be something different.

There will not be a second-hand clothes stall this year. Items cannot be stored in the pews until after 9th July when there is a wedding, so please keep them at home and bring them from 11th July onwards. All proceeds from the Fayre will go to the Mission of the church.

Thank you, from The Team.

We welcome the Venerable Nicola Sullivan, currently Archdeacon of Wells but soon-to-be Dean of Southwell, who is preaching and presiding today at St Mary’s. Nicola led our last parish weekend away and her ministry was welcomed by all who went. We are celebrating Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

In Celebration of Christian Aid Week

“To celebrate Christian Aid Week, Revd Dr Susan Durber (Taunton Baptist Minister) and others will be in our Coffee Shop for Lunch on Wednesday, 18th May.  This is the day, of course, when all of the proceeds from the Coffee Shop will be donated to Christian Aid.  I will be there all day, and hopefully, Fiona Daborn from the charity, will be with me to welcome everyone.  On the same day, a Christian Aid Director will be in Taunton to address the local Chamber of Commerce at breakfast and it may be that he will visit us at St. Mary’s later on.”
